Fique, belonging to the Agavaceae family and Furcraea genus, is cultivated in the Andean zone of Colombia, specially in regions such as Antioquia, Boyacá, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Nariño and Santander. It is considered the second most important fiber in Colombia after cotton. Its thread is used in various craft techniques, such as braiding, crochet, two-needle and pedal loom; to create rugs, espadrilles, sacks, baskets, bags, and more. Only the external leaves of the plant are removed, which allows the growth of crops to continue and prevents deforestation.
